Unrelenting Vision – Sunny Singh, Ep. 35

On this episode of One Step Beyond, we’re pleased to have Sunny Singh on the show. Sunny is a filmographer, programmer, music archivist, and ex-data scientist. Sunny made the leap from a career in science to his website Hate5Six – a site dedicated to archiving live music and social justice. With 122k subscribers, his Youtube channel has become the go-to place for live performances in the world of punk and hardcore. Despite his presence in the modern music industry, it hasn’t all be easy. Aram and Sunny discuss just what unrelenting vision means in times of opposition and uncertainty, of which there are many.

In this episode, we talk about:

• Being comfortable with failure
• Structure for change vs. taking a leap into the defined
• Being a person of colour who talks politics in an otherwise exclusive community
• Building a cultural hub without asking permission
• The false narrative of “if this, then that”
• The useless energy of critique
• Emotional labour for people of colour
